Last week was Not So Great. I really sank into a mire of depression and for a couple of days things were quite difficult. I just re-started medication, though - today is a week of being back on meds, after three years of being off-med - and the fog has started to lift.
Work, I think, is coming to a close. I actually have a (n uneven) tan because summer was so sunny here this year. Already it's getting a little chilly. Mabon is peeking its head around the corner. I am hoping that medication will help with the transition into autumn. I am not interested. At all. I am barely even interested in my birthday. I am only interested in packing my things and leaving this rotted city in my rearview. Did I say that out loud? Anyway. Here's what I have been getting into.
I LOVE Strangers in Paradise but I have not read any of the other books that Terry Moore has put out since (Echo, Rachel Rising, Motor Girl). When Strangers in Paradise XXV came out, I was living in Albany. I bought one issue at a comic book store in Troy and another at the store in Albany. I didn't realize that it was a crossover event, so I think it didn't work for me on that level. I might have to read the other books and try again later.
What really bothered me about SiPXXV was that the plot is launched by a mechanism that just shouldn't have gotten off the ground. As we see later in the story, it's a whole ruse cooked up by my hero Tambi Baker - and I get it - but Katchoo shouldn't have fallen for it. I think that, again, because I haven't read the other comics that I am kind of lost with the rest of the plot (Lilith? Okay), but there are a lot of good stories we could've had with these characters and I'm kind of bummed. I wish we could see Tambi and Casey's life, or maybe the resolution of the whole ambulance explosion plotline that disappeared into the ether somewhere down the line in the third volume of SiP. Halloween is for children, which is a huge scam and I want free candy. I am obligated by peer pressure to be Ooky Spooky because no one likes me to listen to Christmas music in September. (I am doing that anyway.) When adults can participate in trick or treating, I will be less grumpy about Halloween. However, this is my Ooky Spooky pick for this Halloween and every Halloween: Gateways To Abomination. Man, I love this book. I have it in paperback and on Kindle. I recommended it on Twitter and my friend bought it which means I'm an influencer now. Gateways To Abomination is some great creepy short fiction by Matthew M. Bartlett, and I'm familiar with his work from following Ontdcreepy on LiveJournal. It's very horrific without being overly scary, just eerie tales that all weave in and out of each other. Definitely recommended. Today I picked up Bridges Between Worlds: Spirits and Spirit Work in Northern Iceland, and I have already made some headway. It's very good - apparently Corinne Dempsey was in grad school the same time as my advisor, and they're pals - and so far it is interesting and inspirational. I'm familiar with other ideas around mediumship and spiritualism, but this is a new direction and I'm stoked to learn more. I checked out Moominland Midwinter from the library, thinking it would be a comic book, but it is an illustrated story! I have not gotten too far into it, but it definitely had the cozy feel I was looking for. Not pictured: I called the library and asked them to make me a stack of graphic novels - librarian's choice - for evening reading (a suggestion made by one of my friends to break up the school reading I would be doing). They made me a huge stack. The only book in the stack that I'd already read was Fun Home, but I haven't read it in a while so I'm looking forward to reading that again.
Here's what I've been listening to to fall asleep:
